So yesterday, I decided to share a part of my writing practice and decided to feature on this particular post some of my favourite quotes from my current favourite book 'The 5 a.m. Club.'
However, after I had started translating the quotes I realized it wasn't as straightforward as I thought. There is still a lot I have to learn and re-learn. Anyway, I decided to simplify things and instead of the quotes, I chose to focus on simple conversational sentences that transpired within the pages of the book.
Examples of those sentences include:
— As we grow greater, we understand better
GPT Buddy:
Shin 선생님: 우리가 성장할 수록 우리는 더 잘 이해할 수 있어요 (lit. the greater we grow, the better we understand)
Note: According to 쌤, '성장하다' and '커지다" can not be used interchangeably because '커지다' only describes the magnitude of growth while '성장하다 describes the growth of the essence of the subject. In her words, "성장하다 is used for people, community, country, animals and even plants while 커지다 is used for things like food. "
The bread dough got bigger)
훌륭한 사람으로 성장했다 ( ...became a great person)
— What the hell are you doing?
Val님: I literally can not think of a way to write this.(somebody help!
Shin
— You are a painter, right?
Val
— I only eat the best foods, though I don't eat a lot of it.
Shin's explanation: 최상의 sounds like the tastiest, not the best.
최고의 can be the best, but it sounds like the most expensive food, too.
최선의 sounds like the best considering all the options that I have. So I chose it. It sounds humble.
I also learnt something new from 쌤—
'잘 어울려요' meaning 'it looks good on you.'
It is used to express when something 'goes well together' or 'suits each other.'
When comparing one thing to other, you can say '-
After a consonant ending, '은' and '과' comes after, and after a vowel ending, '는' and '와' comes after.
An example of those quotes I wrote about earlier ?
Here is one, "Ordinary people can accomplish extraordinary feats, once they’ve routinized the right habits. Remember every professional was once an amateur and every master started as a beginner."
Thank you for reading this far, with love and everything nice Val님
